Direction Builds Early Confidence

Leadership growth requires opportunity. When someone is learning a new skill, clarity is essential because they often have high motivation but low experience.

New team members often want to succeed but lack experience or confidence.

At this stage, leaders must provide clear direction-what needs to be done, how it should be done, and what success looks like.

Ken Blanchard emphasizes that early leadership guidance prevents confusion and frustration. In my coaching I encourage leaders to think of directions as a confidence builder not a control. 

Direction is not control. It is leadership support at the beginning of growth.

 

This Week's Practice 

Identify someone learning a new task.

This week:

  • Clearly explain expectations
  • Outline the steps for success
  • Check in to ensure understanding 

Clarity creates confidence.

D - Dominance 

Be clear and concise when outlining expectations.

I - Inspiring 

Balance encouragement with specific instructions.

S - Support 

Offer direction while maintaining a supportive tone.

C- Cautious 

Provide structure without overwhelming with detail.



Bottom Line:

Clarity at the beginning prevents confusion later.
