Develop the Person, Not Just the Skill

by Jon Close
Aug 17, 2026

Skills improve performance, but character and mindset shape leadership.

John C. Maxwell emphasizes that leadership development must focus on the whole person—their attitudes, values, discipline, and perspective – not just their technical skills.

Skills may help someone perform a task.
Character determines how they lead others.

Developing the person produces lasting leadership impact.

This Week's Practice

Invest in someone’s growth beyond technical skill.

This week:

  • Discuss leadership mindset
  • Encourage personal development reading (a book, article, or podcast on leadership or character)
  • Ask what leadership qualities they want to strengthen and explore one practical habit they could start this week.

 Leadership development always begins internally.

DISC Insight - Personal Development

D - Dominance

Encourage confidence in leadership voice.

I - Inspiring

Encourage discipline and focus.

S - Support

Encourage confidence in leadership voice.

C- Cautious

Encourage decisiveness and forward movement.

Bottom Line:

Great leaders develop people, not just performance.

Leaders who create lasting impact don't just sharpen people's skills; they invest in the whole person-their character, mindset, and values. When you develop the person, stronger and more sustainable leadership follows.

Coaching Develops Capability
