Stop Arguing with Reality
One of the most powerful insights from the book No Ego by Cy Wakeman is simple: Reality is the starting point for leadership. In my coaching, I frame this as trading “arguments with reality” for “alignment with reality” so leaders can move faster.
Leaders lose momentum when they spend time wishing situations were different rather than responding constructively to what exists.
Reality includes constraints, competing priorities, and unexpected challenges.
Effective leaders accept the facts quickly and move toward solutions.
Acceptance does not mean agreement.
It means recognizing reality so progress can begin.
This Week's Practice
When something unexpected happens this week, try a different leadership response.
Instead of asking: "Why is this happening?"
Ask:
"Now that this is happening, what is the best next step?"
That simple shift moves leadership energy from reaction to progress.
DISC Insight - Responding to Reality
D - Dominance
Accept that not every obstacle can be removed immediately. Focus on the next achievable step.
I - Inspiring
Avoid dramatizing challenges. Focus conversations on solutions.
S - Support
Accept that change is part of progress. Focus on steady adaption.
C- Cautious
Avoid overanalyzing what went wrong. Focus on improving the system moving forward.
Bottom Line:
Leaders do not waste energy resisting reality.
They treat reality as the launchpad, using what is true today to decide what to do next.
