Simplify the Critical Few

by Jon Close
Feb 23, 2026

Busy is not productive.

When everything feels important, nothing truly is. Leaders who lack focus unintentionally create noise, rework, and frustration for their teams.

As Patrick Lencioni emphasizes, clarity and focus are hallmarks of healthy leadership. Simplicity sharpens execution.

This Week's Practice

Ask yourself—or your team—this question:

  1. “What are the 1–3 priorities that matter most right now?”
  • Name them. Communicate them.
  • Defer or park the rest.

DISC Insight - How Each Styles Handles Focus

D - Dominance (Action/Results/Speed)

You move fast and may take on too much. Simplify by narrowing your focus to the highest-impact outcomes. Fewer priorities mean faster results.

I - Influence (Possibilities/Energy)

You see many opportunities at once. Simplify by committing to a short list. Focus strenghtens follow-through.

S - Support (Consistency/ Support/Stability)

You try to support everything and everyone. Simplify by gaining clarity on what truly matters. Focus reduces stress and overload.

C- Cautious (Detail/Accuracy/Analysis)

You may over-analyze multiple priorities. Simplify by identifying what must be done now. Focus improves efficiency and quality.

Bottom Line:

Simplicity drives execution.

Purposeful leaders focus on what matters most-and let go of the rest.

In my coaching, I invite leaders to...
Focus on What You Can Control
Leaders lose valuable time when they focus on circumstances outside their control. In No Ego, Cy Wakeman reminds us that leadership influence grows when we stop resisting reality and begin working productively within it. In my work with leaders, I translate this into a simple discipline: notice reality, name your influence, then choose one next move.  Conditions are not always ideal.Constraint...
Leadership Multiplies Through People
Leadership is not measured by how much we accomplish personally. It is measured by how many leaders we develop. Many leaders unintentionally limit their influence because they try to do everything themselves. While that may produce short-term efficiency, it restricts long-term growth. John C. Maxwell teaches that a leader’s greatest return come from developing leaders who, in turn, develop ot...
