Leaders Give Opportunity, Not Just Instruction

by Jon Close
Sep 14, 2026

Leadership development rarely happens through instruction alone.

It happens through experience.

John C. Maxwell teaches that leaders must give people opportunities to try, learn, adjust, and improve if they want growth to be real, not theoretical. When leaders only provide direction but never opportunity, growth remains theoretical.

Opportunity turns knowledge into leadership ability.

This Week’s Practice

Give someone an opportunity to lead.

This week:

Note: Treat this as a development assignment, not just a task hand-off.

• Ask them to lead a meeting discussion

• Assign ownership of a project component

• Invite them to present an idea or recommendation to the team or to you, and debrief what they learned afterward.

Leadership grows through doing, not just observing.

DISC Insight – Creating Opportunity

D – Dominant
Provide challenges that stretch leadership capacity.

I – Inspiring
Encourage opportunities to lead communication and engagement.

S – Supportive
Offer gradual leadership responsibilities to build confidence.

C – Cautious
Encourage opportunities to lead improvements and systems, even if the approach differs from yours.

Bottom Line

Leaders don’t just tell people what to do; they give them real chances to lead, try, and learn. When opportunity meets preparation, leadership potential starts to become genuine leadership ability.

Leadership potential becomes leadership ability when opportunity meets preparation.

Maxwell emphasizes that leaders should celebrate growth—not just end results – so people stay motivated to keep developing. When leaders acknowledge improvement, people become more motivated to continue developing. Recognition is a powerful form of leade...
Leaders Model What They Expect
People pay far more attention to what leaders do than what leaders say. Leadership example sets the tone for the entire team. John C. Maxwell teaches that credibility grows when leaders consistently model the behaviors they expect from others to live out. Integrity, preparation, accountability, and attitude are all taught through example. Leadership influence always begins with personal example...
