Great Leaders Develop Independent Thinkers

by Jon Close
Sep 28, 2026

The ultimate goal of leadership is not dependence. It is independence.

When leaders develop capable, confident individuals who can think, decide, and act responsibly, the organization becomes stronger.

Ken Blanchard’s situational leadership model ultimately leads to people who can lead themselves. This is the mark of effective leadership development.

This Week’s Practice

Encourage independent thinking.

This week:

Instead of giving answers immediately, ask:

  • “What do you think the best solution is?”
  • “What options do you see?”
  • “What would you recommend?”

Leaders develop independence when they invite others to think.

DISC Insight – Encouraging Ownership

Dominant

Invite others to contribute ideas before deciding.

Inspiring

Encourage thoughtful decision-making.

Supportive

Support others as they step into responsibility.

Cautious

Encourage progress even when solutions are not perfect.

Bottom Line

The goal of leadership is not control. It is developing people who can lead themselves and others.

When leaders only provide direction but never opportunity, growth remains theoretical. Opportunity turns knowledge into leadership ability. This Wee...
Build a Leadership Culture
Leadership development should not be occasional. It should become part of the organization’s culture. When leadership development becomes normal, people naturally grow, contribute ideas, and step forward. John C. Maxwell teaches that teams and/or organizations thrive when leaders intentionally build cultures where developing leaders is everyone’s responsibility, not just HR’s or senior manageme...
